12 Non-Pumpkin Pies for Thanksgiving

Check out 12 Non-Pumpkin Pies for Thanksgiving!
by Natalie McLaury at Foodie.com
At 28 years old, I have yet to host Thanksgiving. I have no doubt my time will come and until then, I'm pretty okay with being the sous chef and letting either my mom or my father-in-law, both fantastic cooks, do the bulk of the cooking! This year we'll be with Ryan's family for Thanksgiving and Ryan will actually be smoking a turkey to serve alongside the traditional roasted turkey. An aunt has the desserts covered, but our family abides by the law that there's no such thing as too many desserts, so I'm contemplating what I can contribute to the table next week.

I'm already pretty sold on remaking the Pumpkin Layer Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting, and I know Aunt Julie will be bringing Banana Pudding (non-traditional for Thanksgiving, maybe, but the best) and her famous chocolate cookies. Even with all of those options, I can't help but think we need some pie. It's Thanksgiving after all! I know a lot of you don't like pumpkin pie (don't worry, we can still be friends) and since our bases are covered when it comes to a pumpkin dessert, I've instead put together a collection of non-pumpkin pies that can be found on Foodie.

A few years ago I made the Salted Caramel Pie and I'm still pretty partial to that one, although part of me says we're already abandoning the traditional desserts so maybe we should go for the crowd-pleasing Reese's Fudge Pie! From chocolate pies to pecan pies to Biscoff pies to pie milkshakes, I have some serious decision-making to do before next week!

Apples for Days: A Dozen Favorites

by Natalie McLaury at Foodie.com
A few weeks ago we loaded up babies and strollers and the abundance of gear that we tend to bring anytime we go anywhere, and we headed to Eckert's apple orchard with a group of friends/family. In typical St. Louis fashion, it was over 90 degrees that "fall" day and we found ourselves dripping sweat on the hayride as the tractor pulled us to the apple orchard.
As you can see from the photo, Brecken wasn't all that amused. She was content to chow on an apple the size of her face but refused to smile for the camera or even pretend to be interested in any of the fall festivities that day. Thankfully my excitement made up for the lack of Brecken's. It partially stems from my own fond memories of apple picking as a child, but also because I love cooking with apples.
Pumpkin Apple Streusel Cake

I've created a collection of apple recipes on Foodie, highlighting some of the ways I've been using (and plan to use) apples this season. Two years ago I made Pumpkin Apple Streusel Cake and I've been looking for an excuse to make it again. I've already made Apple Buttermilk Muffins a few times recently and I make Curried Butternut Squash multiple times each fall and winter. I'm never without apples in my crisper drawer this time of year and they find their way into a recipe, sweet or savory, each week!

Perhaps next year Brecken will be more interested in a trip to the apple orchard but until then I've got enough excitement for the both of us! Check out my entire apple collection (aptly titled Apples for Days: A Dozen Favorites) and pick your favorite to make!

12 Fast & Fresh Freezer Meals

Check out 12 Fast & Fresh Freezer Meals
by Natalie McLaury at Foodie.com

I'm straying from my normal weekly schedule and popping in on a Tuesday, but it's for a good reason (and I'll resume regular posting tomorrow with another MINT recipe!)! When Mode Media, my advertising company, started looking for contributors to talk this month about quick family meals, I knew I had to share. I tell you guys all the time that I'm always on the hunt for quick and easy meals, especially now since I prefer to spend my evenings with Brecken rather than in the kitchen.
BBQ Beer Chicken is perfect to freeze and reheat!
My saving grace lately? Freezer Meals! I've always tried to have at least a few meals stockpiled in the freezer to pull out on busy weeknights, but they've become even more essential in the last few months. I did a marathon freezer meal prep session while I was pregnant and we're finally finishing up the last few of those. Now I'm in the midst of planning another giant session with my sister and two of my best friends. In two Sundays we're getting together to knock out 10 different recipes (plus each bringing a breakfast and dessert item for the freezer!), so I've been on the hunt for meals that are easy to prepare and then freeze.
I love having Quinoa Granola Bars frozen and ready to grab fo

We're hoping if all goes well in a few weeks we can make this a semi-regular thing, thus eliminating a lot of the stress around cooking during the week. I realize that a long day in the kitchen doesn't exactly equate to "quick family meals", but it does if you're willing to work hard for one day and then reap the benefits many evenings to come. There is no better feeling than coming home from work and knowing you just need to pop dinner in the oven or reheat something on the stovetop. The collection above includes a few of my favorites (like Nacho Black Bean Burgers and BBQ Beer Chicken), as well as some new ones we plan to try, after researching how well they'll freeze, such as the Turkey Tetrazinni

Check out the entire collection of 10 Fast & Fresh Freezer Meals for some of your own freezer inspiration and leave a comment with your favorite freezer-friendly meals that we can add to our next marathon cook day!

Summer DeLIGHTS...a dozen fresh recipes!

Check out Summer DeLIGHTS...a dozen fresh recipes!
by Natalie McLaury at Foodie.com
I know summer officially began last weekend, but for me it starts this weekend since we're on vacation! To be honest, summer doesn't hold quite the same excitement that it did for me as a kid, since I'm still cooped up in an office for 9ish hours a day. However, even if I can't spend my days hanging out at the pool or riding my bike through the neighborhood after the 4th sleepover in a row with my neighborhood friends, I can still enjoy summer through one of my favorite ways: food!
Brecken, living the summer life!
Summer produce, summer eating style (aka lots of grilling), summer dining locations (outside!)...I love it all! Today I'm celebrating with a collection I made on Foodie, featuring a dozen recipes that scream summer to me. They're bright and fresh with summer's finest foods (think berries, squash, and a personal favorite, watermelon) but still light, which is what we're usually going for this time of year.

The collection is a mish-mash of favorites from The Sweets Life (white pesto pizza with tomatoes and basil and healthified zucchini bread, to name a few) as well as recipes I discovered on other blogs that feature summer's finest. Check out the entire collection on Foodie and let me know what your favorite summer recipes are!

Note--this post is sponsored by Foodie, but the collection was created by me and all thoughts & comments are my own!

A Dozen Sunday Dinners for the Grill

It's official, I'm declaring it grill season! Never mind that we woke up to a dusting of snow on the ground earlier this week. Never mind that there's no guarantee we'll ever get Spring this year. We're going to break out the grills and force ourselves to transition out of Winter, even if the weather refuses to cooperate wherever you're living!
Kentucky-Style Turkey Burgers with Red-Eye Bourbon Onions
Foodie by Glam, my advertising company, is featuring Sunday Supper Collections for the month of April, and my mind immediately went to the grill. One of our favorite ways to spend a weekend is on our patio with friends, grilling up something for dinner. I've rounded up a few of my favorites from The Sweets Life, such as our all time favorite turkey burgers (pictured above), and also found some fun new ones to try, like grilled tri-tip with tequila marinade

Check out my entire roundup and make one for tonight's Sunday Supper. We're actually having decent weather in St. Louis this weekend, so you better believe we'll be outside grilling!
